In 1920 Maria Vidal Sonet and Domingo Tarrés Martí opened a small shop in Carrer Montserrat 9 in El Vendrell.
They first sold shirts and underwear, but soon specialised in crafting espadrilles by hand. They managed the entire process: washing, carding, and twisting the hemp, shaping the soles, sewing, and finishing. That is how the story that now celebrates 100 years began.
Later, their son Pere Tarrés Vidal and his wife Dolors Pons Prades joined the business and gave it new momentum. They endured the hardships of the Spanish Civil War and lost everything, so after the war they had to start again from scratch.
They began buying shoes from wholesalers in Barcelona who supplied merchandise on consignment; every week they paid for what they had sold and received new pairs.
Eventually Pere and Dolors’ daughters, Josefina and Maria Tarrés Pons, joined the family business. Maria stayed on and, together with her husband Josep Cullaré Esteban, expanded the company by opening another store.
Over time their children —Josep, Anna, and Maria— also became part of the project.
Today we have five stores and, without losing the spirit of our origins, one of them continues to be Espardenyeria Tarrés “Cal Sopa”.
The other four shops cover every style of footwear: kids, youth, comfort, and top brands.
